David McClure

BlueDevilsPlayground was able to conduct an interview with  David McClure recently. McClure is a Class of 2004 Duke recruit from Stamford, Connecticut. He attends Trinity Catholic High School. His high school team is scheduled to participate in the Glaxo-Smith-Kline Tournament in Raleigh December 27-30. Below is the transcript of our interview with McClure. (12/7)

BDP:  How did your Trinity High School team do last year & how do things look this year?

We did very well last year. We went 27-1 & we won our division & state championship. As far as this year's team, we lost our starting point guard from last year. The guy who played the 2 will be moving over to take over the point this year. We also lost a couple of big guys. One of them did a lot of the dirty work inside & was our leader since he was a sophomore. We will definitely be competitive. But it might take a while to get used to each other & to get used to our style of play & everything.

BDP: What position do you usually play for your high school team?

Sort of like a 4. I will play small forward or some power forward. I try to drift out sometimes on the perimeter as much as I can.

BDP:  We know that your team will be playing in the Glaxo Tournament after Christmas. Do you intend on taking in a Duke game while you are down here? Have you ever been to a Duke game when the Crazies were in school?

I will probably go to the Davidson game. I was at the NC State game last year. I can't wait to get a chance to play in front of the Crazies.

BDP:  What number are you looking to wear at Duke?

That is a problem. I wear the number 15, which Dockery is wearing now. I have no idea what number I would wear. But I will figure something out.

BDP: Have you decided what you will be majoring in at Duke?

I haven't really decided yet. My sister went to UMass & she went in open-minded & ended up majoring in something she really enjoyed. So I think that is what I think I will do. I will just go in open-minded & see where it takes me.

BDP: Can you describe what you consider to be the strengths of your game & what areas do you think needs the most work?

Definitely the strength of my game is not going out there being concerned about what I need to do, but just go out there & do what I can do to help the team. I don't want to go out there with too many personal goals because in a team situation personal goals come second. I will do whatever you need me to do to help the team win. As far as things that I need to work on, the main thing I need to work on is definitely my handle & taking my outside shot with confidence.

BDP:  What position do you see yourself playing at Duke?

I would say most likely the 3. Kind of like what Dahntay played.

BDP:  What was the primary factor that led you to choose Duke & what school would you have gone to if you hadn't chosen Duke?

Duke was the best combination of academics & athletics, basketball especially. Other schools that were recruiting me were Notre Dame, NC State, Florida State, & Villanova. I would say that Notre Dame was the runnerup.

BDP:  Have you heard from the Duke coaching staff lately & which Duke coach was most involved in your recruitment?

Yea, I heard from both Coach K & Wojo just this week. They were all a little bit involved with my recruitment, but it was Wojo primarily.

BDP:  What player past or present, either at Duke, in the NBA, or in college that your game would be comparable?

Coach K thinks that I could be something like Shane Battier. Who knows if  I might grow a little & will be able to play a lot of inside-outside kinda like Battier did. My dad is 6-4 & my mom is 5-10 & there is height on each side of my family. So there is a possibility that I could grow some more.

BDP:  What kind of hobbies or interest do you have outside of basketball?

I like to just hangout with my friends, play video games, & listen to music.

BDP:  Do you ever check out any of the Duke websites?

Yea. My mom does a lot & I will use her name or password sometimes to read the articles & stuff. She keeps up with that stuff more than I do. She is on the net at least 3 or 4 times a week.

BDP: Did you grow up as a Duke fan?

I grew up being forced to be a UConn fan. My mom was a huge UConn fan. Personally, I kind of grew up as a Carolina fan. I was a big Michael Jordan fan. But I switched quickly & threw out all my baby blue stuff. My best friend, JR Smith, is going to be going there. We played on the same AAU team the last 2 years. I can't wait to play against him so I can bring his head down.

BDP: What professional teams are you a fan of?

I am not a die-hard Yankees fan. But I am enough of a Yankees fan to not be a Red Sox fan. In the NFL, I am a Titans fan. In the NBA, I have always been a Bulls fan because of Michael Jordan. I like TMac, but I don't like the Magic.

BDP: David, thanks for your time.Good luck this season & we are looking forward to seeing you in a Duke uniform next year.

Thanks. Nice talking to you too.
