Jon Scheyer (Class of 2006)

Jon Scheyer has been described by his high school coach at Glenbrook North High School in Glenbrook, Illinois as "a younger version of Larry Bird". That may be true when Scheyer is the focus of the offense, as he likely was for his high school team, but is less evident when he is on a more talented team, as he was at the Boo Williams this weekend. Some were not particularly impressed by Scheyer this weekend, however, it is our belief that he is the kind of player who needs to be seen more than once to fully appreciate what he brings to the game & to his team.

BDP observed Scheyer's Illinois Warriors team at the Boo Williams on Friday night against Kevin Love's Oregon Select team, as well as part of the Warriors' game versus Memphis on Saturday. Scheyer scored 7 points, had 3 rebounds, & dished out 3 assists in the Warriors' win over Oregon Select. Scheyer demonstrated a smooth shooting stroke from beyond the arc & also had an impressive dribble-drive across the lane to finish with his left hand.

In talking with Scheyer following Friday night's game, it is obvious that Scheyer is extremely interested in Duke. He hails from the same high school which produced current Duke assistant coach Chris Collins & word has it that Collins was one of Scheyer's childhood heroes. Scheyer's interest in Duke is also evidenced by his plans to attend a session of the Duke Basketball Camp this summer.  Duke's interest in Scheyer is also being returned, as Scheyer revealed that Duke is expected to attend an open gym at Glenbrook North High School on April 28th.

While Scheyer was not willing to name a leader at this point in his recruitment, it is fairly safe to say that Duke is at, or near, the top of a list that includes Kansas, Illinois, Marquette, Arizona, Michigan, Michigan State, California, Texas, as well as Duke.

IMPRESSIONS:
Scheyer obviously has very good basketball skills. He has an excellent stroke on his jump shot, as well as excellent range on his shot. He also has a very good handle & is able to slash to the basket & finish with either hand. Scheyer also sees the court well & will find the open man & deliver the ball to him with precision. Scheyer has decent, not great, athletic skills. The biggest concern regarding Scheyer is his size & strength. He needs to put on some weight & get much, much stronger in order to compete at the high-major level of college basketball. But Scheyer is only a sophomore in high school & has plenty of time to get stronger by the time he graduates from high school.
