Duke Gets Double Dose
Duke received some good news on the recruiting trail recently when Class of 2005 combo guard Abby
Waner committed to play for the Blue Devils. The news became double when her sister, Emily, anounced that she will be transferring
to Duke from the University of Colorado.
Abby chose Duke over Connecticut & will join the Blue Devil roster for the 2005-2005 season.
She scored 32 PPG while leading her Thunder Ridge High School team to their 2nd consecutive state tile. She was also named
Colorado Girl's High School Player of the Year by the Denver Post.
Emily is a 5-8 guard who scored at a 7.1 PPG clip during her freshman season at Colorado. She
also was named Colorado Girl's High School Player of the Year by the Denver Post during her senior season, as she also led
Thunder Ridge High School to the state title.
Abby will be freshman during the 05-06 season, while Emily will be a redshirt-sophomore. (5/5/04)
Beard & Tillis WNBA First Round Picks
Duke seniors Alana Beard & Iciss Tillis were both picked in the first round of yesterday's (April
17) WNBA draft. Beard was selected by the Washington Mystics & was the 2nd overall pick of the draft, while Tillis was
selected by the defending WNBA champion Detroit Shock & was the 11th pick overall. Diana Taurasi of the national champion
Connecticut Huskies was the top overall pick of the draft, as she was selected by Phoenix. Beard & Tillis will both be
coached by former NBA players. Detroit is coached by former Pistons star Bill Laimbeer, while Washington is coached by former
Denver Nuggets star Michael Adams. (4/18/04)

Beard Wins Inaugural Wooden Award
Duke senior Alana Beard was honored as the winner of the inaugural women's John R. Wooden Award given
to college basketball's top college basketball player Friday. Beard, who averaged 19.7 points, 5.4 rebounds
and 3.9 assists, received the Wooden Award in a ceremony at the California Yacht Club.
Beard, a three-time All-American, led the Blue Devils to a 30-4 record and the No. 1 ranking in the
season's final Associated Press poll. The 5-foot-11 senior from Shreveport, La., previously was voted player of the year by
the AP and won the Wade Trophy. (4/10/04)
Duke Loses to Minnesota in Elite 8
Duke's dreams of a national championship season came to a screeching halt with an 80-76 loss to #7
seed Minnesota in the Mideast Region Championship game. Duke took a 7-6 lead with 16:19 remaining in the first half on a Lindsey
Harding free throw. The Blue Devils did score again for over 5 minutes, as they missed 12 consecutive shots from the field.
Although Duke was able to fight to tied the score at 59 with 5:20 left to be played, the Blue Devils were never able to regain
the lead.
Monique Currie's 21 points & 9 rebounds paced the Blue Devils. The loss ends the careers of the
senior trio of Alana Beard, Iciss Tillis, & Vicki Krapohl. During their careers the senior trio won 4 ACC Regular Season
Championships, 4 ACC Tournament Championships, 2 NCAA Tournament Regional Championships, & participated in 2 Final Fours.
Duke concludes the 2003-2004 season with a 30-4 overall record. (3/30/04)

Beard Named AP All-American 3rd Straight Year
Duke senior Alana Beard was the only unanimous
selection to the 2003-2004 Associated Press 1st team All-American team & joined former Tennessee All-American Chamique Holdsclaw as the only players to be selected to the AP 1st team three straight years.
Beard was the only ACC player to be selected to any of the three All-American teams selected by the AP. Duke forward Iciss

Five Blue Devils Named All-ACC
The ACC regular season champion Blue Devils had five members named to the 1st, 2nd, & 3rd team
All-ACC squad. Alana Beard & Iciss Tillis were named to the first team. Beard was a unanimous selection. Monique Currie
was named 2nd team All-ACC, while Mistie Bass & Lindsey Harding were named to the 3rd team. Beard & Harding were also
