Fresh off a trip to Hampton, Virginia in which Scheyer participated in the Boo Williams with
his Illinois Warriors AAU team, BDP was able to catch up with Scheyer to discuss his recruitment & his summer plans. Following
is a breakdown of our conversation with Scheyer:
BDP: Can you give us a rundown of what AAU events and/or individual camps you will be attending
this summer?
We will going to Houston to play in the Kingwood Classic (April 23-25), we will also be going to
New Orleans to play in the Memorial Day Classic (May 29-31), we will also be going to the Peach Jam in South Carolina (July
14-17, Augusta, SC), & we will also be going to Las Vegas to play in The Main Event (July 22-26). As far as individual
camps, I plan on going to the All-American Camp (July 6-10, Indianapolis). I had planned on going to the NBA Players Camp,
but I need to spend some time with my high school team, so I won't be going to the NBA Players Camp.
BDP: We understand that you are planning on attending a session of the Duke Basketball Camp
this summer. Do you know which session you will be attending & can you explain to us how that materialized?
I am not sure which session I will be attending or what the dates are for when I will be going. Coach
Collins had tried to get me to go to their camp last summer, but we couldn't get it worked out. This year we have worked it
out & I am really looking forward to it.
BDP: Can you give us a rundown of the list of schools that you are considering & give
us an idea of when you are likely to trim down your list, as well as when you hope to make a decision?
Right now my list is pretty long. Duke, North Carolina, Wake Forest, Kansas, Marquette, Illinois,
Michigan State, Stanford, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, & California are all schools that I have been hearing from. I
hope to have it trimmed down to 2 or 3 schools by next summer & hope to be able to make a decision before I begin my senior
year.
BDP: Among those schools that you listed, have any already made offers?
Yes. Michigan State, Marquette, Kansas, California, Illinois, & Wisconsin have all made offers.
BDP: We understand that your school will be hosting an open gym soon. Can you tell us some
details about that & do you expect anyone from the Duke staff to attend?
It is supposed to be on April 28th. Basically, my high school coach is inviting the schools that
have shown interest in me to attend. Hopefully, Coach K & Coach Collins will be able to attend.
BDP: What is your height & weight?
I am about 6-5 & weigh around 175 lbs.
BDP: What type of training are you doing to try to build up your body & get stronger?
Right now I am working with a personal trainer 3 days a week. Beginning, I believe, April 26th I
will be working with the Chicago Bulls trainer throughout the summer whenever I am not traveling to tournaments with my AAU
team, or going to camps.
BDP: What player either in college or the NBA do you pattern your game after, or do you think
your game resembles?
That is a tough question. I would say that I am probably sort of a mix between Mike Dunleavy &
Kirk Hinrich. I think that I am kind of versatile & can do a lot of different things like those guys.
BDP: Can you tell us a little about your academics? Do you have any ideas what you are interested
in as a possible major in college?
I have a 3.3 GPA. I had a 3.5 GPA & made the Dean's List this past semester. I have no idea what
I want to major in when I go to college, but I know that I would like to coach at some point after I am finished playing.
BDP: Who is the best player you have ever played against?
Shaun Livingston
BDP: Who is the best player you have ever played with?
I would have to say Julian Wright
BDP: Of course, Julian Wright is a teammate of yours on the Illinois Warriors AAU team &
has Duke listed among his top 6 schools. Are you aware of how much interest Wright has in Duke?
Julian is being recruited pretty hard by some schools. I think his interest in Duke is probably dependent
on how much interest Duke shows in him & whether they let him know that they really want him.
BDP: Jon, thanks for your time. How have you been handling the pressures involved in your
recruitment?
I have been enjoying it quite a lot. It is great meeting all the coaches & stuff. It can get
annoying sometimes, but I am just trying to have fun with it.
