Kingwood Classic - Final Report
The Georgia Stars, led by Georgia Bulldogs recruit Louis Williams, edged Spiece Indy Heat 65-62
in the championship game of the 17 & under Gold Division, as the Kingwood Classic in Houston, Texas wound down this afternoon.
Duke recruit Josh McRoberts' 35 footer, which would have sent the game into overtime, just missed at the buzzer.
Al Butterworth has been our man observing the action this weekend at the Kingwood & he has submitted
the following report on Sunday's action:
Greg Paulus' SRap team advanced to the Sweet 16 round, but were defeated by Team Texas in the quarterfinal
round today. Al was extremely impressed with Paulus' play this weekend & envisions Paulus as a Bobby Hurley-type point
guard during his career at Duke. Paulus demonstrated a sweet shooting stroke, is an excellent passer, is extremely competitive,
& plays with a lot of fire in his belly.
Josh McRoberts' Spiece Indy Heat team, as mentioned above, advanced to the championship game, but
fell short in a close loss to the Georgia Stars in the finals. Although Indy Heat led by 10 points midway through the second
half, their guards had trouble handling a fullcourt zone press employed by the Georgia Stars during the last several minutes
of the championship game. In the championship game McRoberts scored 5 points, pulled down 10 rebounds, has 2 blocks, &
dished out 3 assists.
Indy Heat made it to the championship game by defeating the Illinois Wolves, led by sweet-shooting
guard Bobby Frasor, in the quarterfinal round, as McRoberts contributed 12 points & 10 rebounds. Indy Heat bested Memphis
YOMCA in the semifinals, as McRoberts made several key baskets down the stretch & ended the game with 16 points &
9 boards. McRoberts had, according to Al, the best dunk he saw all weekend in the semifinals when, from 15 feet, he drove
by his man & finished with a power dunk with the right hand.
Al Butterworth's Impressions:
McRoberts showed himself to be an excellent rebounder & is ambidextrous around the basket.
He is also the ultimate team player, as he is always looking for the open teammate. McRoberts was also used very effectively
at the high post & was excellent at feeding teammate Greg Oden in the low post.
Spiece Indy Heat's Greg Oden & Daequan Cook were also very impressive throughout the weekend.
Oden is a bull inside & has a soft shooting touch around the rim, while Cook is an extremely athletic wing player who
is also an excellent shooter. Cook also converted an impressive Grant Hill-type dunk off of a lob pass from a teammate
in today's action.
Here are some of Al's impressions of other top prospect which he viewed in today's action:
Tyrell Biggs (Metro Hawks) Biggs is a 6-8, 260lb. post prospect from the 2005 class, who seemed
to be drawing a lot of interest from the many coaches at the Kingwood. Biggs is big-bodied & very strong. He also possesses
a soft shooting stroke from out to 15 feet, as well as some polished post moves, including a nice drop step. Finally, Biggs
has extremely quick feet for someone his size, as well as good athletic ability.
Louis Williams (Georgia Stars) Williams is a 6-2 top 10 guard prospect from the Class of 2005. He
is extremely quick, has an excellent handle, & is a deadly shooter with unlimited range. He has given an oral commitment
to the Georgia Bulldogs.
Bobby Frasor (Illinois Wolves) Frasor is a 6-3 guard prospect from Chicago who was probably the best
pure shooter at the Kingwood. He also is excellent at pulling up off the dribble & draining the mid-range shot. He has
average athletic ability, but is an absolute deadly long-range shooter. Al noted that UNC head coach Roy Williams seemed to
be very interested in Frasor & was seen observing, at least, 2 of Frasor's games this weekend.
BDP would like to thank Al Butterworth for his outstanding work this weekend in providing our readers
with excellent information & analysis of the action at the Kingwood Classic. Thanks Al.
